Commissioned by MacGregor State High School in 2008 in partnership with Queensland Theatre Company and Backbone Youth Arts, Under the Chicago Moon, is a musical comedy developed by a large cast of advanced drama students.

Mellor used the inital concept to write the script combining songs from the musical Chicago, and other favourites, with the story of a hopeless thief who messes with the wrong crowd. The production played to full houses at MacGregor State High School.
